Two exciting newcomers, Mia Fishel and Jaidyn Shaw, are on the roster for the U.S. Women's National Team for the first time since the 2023 World Cup, but which of the upcoming competition's final There are zero hints as to which veteran will replace them.
The Paris Olympics are 10 months away, and after the worstWorld Cupin program history, it is imperative to evolve. However, rather than accelerate its evolution with an experimental roster for two friendlies against South Africa in September, U.S. Soccer has recalled its entire World Cup roster and a few fringe players and youngsters, making exceptions only in case of injury.
This means that veterans such as Alex Morgan, Kelly O'Hara Julie Ertz and Megan Rapinoe will play their "farewell games" in Cincinnati (September 21) and Chicago (September 24), respectively.
In total,21 of the23 players who lost the World Cup in the round of 16 return.
They will be coached by Twila Kilgore,a former assistant to Vlatko Andonovski,
who was named interim head coach after Andonovski resignedlast month. However, it is unclear to what extent Kilgore had a say in roster organization."As we continued our search for a new head coach, we thought it best to call up all World Cup players who were fit to play. At the same time, as we begin preparations for next year's Olympic Games, we have also brought in players who we believe will be useful going forward," sporting director Matt Crocker said in a statement through U.S. Soccer.
Crocker was the first person quoted in the news release announcing the roster, which features a total of 27 players.

Goalkeepers: Aubrey Kingsbury (Washington Spirit), Casey Murphy (North Carolina Courage), Alyssa Neher (Chicago Red Stars)
Defenders Alana Cook (OL Rain), Tierna Davidson (Chicago Red Stars), Crystal Dunn (Portland Thorns) Emily Fox (North Carolina Courage), Naomi Girma (San Diego Wave) Sophia Huerta (OL Rain), Casey Krueger (Chicago Red Stars), Kelly O'Hara (Gotham FC), Emily Sonnett (OL Rain)
繼續閲Midfielders Sam Coffey (Portland Thorns), Savannah DeMello (Racing Louisville), Julie Ertz (Unattached), Lindsey Horan (Lyon), Rose Lavelle (OL Rain), Ashley Sanchez (Washington Spirit), Andy Sullivan (Washington Spirit)
Forwards Mia Fishel (Chelsea), Ashley Hatch (Washington Spirit), Alex Morgan (San Diego Wave), Megan Rapinoe (OL Rain), Trinity Rodman (Washington Spirit), Yedin Shaw (San Diego Wave), Alyssa Thompson (Angel City), Lynn Williams (Gotham FC)
Arts is Announced his retirement from soccer two weeks ago,Rapinoe will leave after the first of two friendlies. Rapinoe announced before the World Cup that she would retire after the National Women's Soccer League season
and will only play in the second match. The question is who will play alongside them. Playing against opponents in the World Cup Round of 16 requires a delicate balance between remembering the past and preparing for the near and long-term future. Both Ertz and Rapinoe definitely deserve congratulations. Others like Morgan will one day, and many of the veterans who played in 2023 will play in 2024 if the U.S. is still aiming for Olympic gold.
Morgan, however, will be 38 in July 2027, when the next World Cup will be held. O'Hara will be 39 at 38. Alyssa Neher is 39, Crystal Dunn is 35, and Lynn Williams is 34. Lindsay Horan, Rose Lavelle, Andy Sullivan, and Emily Sonnett are entering their 30s. And every minute they play between now and Paris will be a minute that the next generation will not get.
Some of that next generation are already firmly established in the USWNT. Smith, Trinity Rodman, Alyssa Thompson, and Naomi Girma appear to be the core. But the core needs to be expanded.
According to Kilgore, they will likely include Katharina Macario, who has yet to fully recover from a June 2022 ACL tear.
The other two potential members are Shaw (18) and Fishel (22).
Fishel played three seasons at UCLA before bypassing the NWSL and signing with Tigres in Mexico. She was very successful in Liga MX Femenil for a season and a half, causing a chorus of fans to call for a national team call-up. Nonetheless, Fishel made the summer switch to Chelsea, the English champions and one of the top clubs in the world, and while her fit with the USWNT is still unclear, her talent is solid. She should be given every opportunity to compete for a spot on the Olympic roster.
Shaw may be a long way from being a USWNT regular, but she turned pro at age 17 and has been impressive since bypassing college to sign with the NWSL's San Diego Wave. She has the potential to play anywhere, whether on the front line or at No. 10. She appears to be one of the best young playmakers in the American pool.
However, it is unclear what or how much her presence on this roster means. The search for Andonovsky's replacement is ongoing.
"The future opportunities will be in the hands of his successor.
"I look forward to having the opportunity to pay tribute to the players who have decided to retire, but I also know that these games are a valuable first step toward Paris," Crocker, who will lead the coaching search, said in a statement. . "Once a new head coach is appointed, that person will assess the roster of players and make roster decisions that will focus on building the team for the future."
